Ceili dancing came into prominence early in the 20th century and appears to have reached the height of its popularity in the 1930s-70³s, after which it went into decline.

During that period the µCeili³ phenomenon was widespread throughout every corner of Ireland and England and as far afield as New Zealand, Australia and America. Irish nationalism was popular and the dancing was one of the great expressions of Irishness. It was a place where they met and socialised with others from rural backgrounds and danced the dances they were familiar with back home.
